SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch Review

You are currently viewing SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch Review

In this article, I give you my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch review with specs included. This is an Android Honeycomb tablet with a thin and lite profile, name code GT-P7500/M16. It does resemble Apple iPad in many ways and it certainly wins amongst all Android tablets on looks.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch tablet has a wide-screen aspect ratio, it’s longer than the iPad. This is the Samsung standard 1280 by 800 pixels display which is most widely used across Samsung devices of this era.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch runs Android Honeycomb 3.1 operating system out of the box.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch Design

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch (Gt-P7510) visually looks incredibly thin, it is 0.34 inches, so it’s as thin as an iPad 2, and it’s one of the thinnest on the market. The weight is only 1.25 lbs (0.57 kg), making it the lightest Android tablet and right close to iPad 2 in that aspect too.

On one of the longer sides (bottom), you can see Samsung proprietary connector, the same one that’s on the 7 inch Galaxy Tab. So, if you have accessories for that, they should work with this connector.

There are very few ports or control buttons of any kind on this tablet. There are stereo speaker outputs on two sides (left and right). The sound is very good for a tablet.

On the top side there is a power button, volume controls, and a standard 3,5 mm audio jack. Buttons have nice feel and click is with not much travel.

What you can notice is that there is no HDMI connector. That’s because you need to buy a Samsung proprietary adapter that connects to the multi-function port on the bottom side of the device.

There is no MicroUSB ports and no MicroSD card slot. Most other tablets of this class have MicroSD card slot so that can be a drawback.

The device I have on this review has 16 GB of internal memory and it cannot be expanded with memory cards. But, there is an option for you to get a 32 GB version of this tablet.

On the backside, there is a 3 Mpix camera with LED flash and on the front side, there is a video chat camera with 2.0 Mpix.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch is available in two colors, the arctic white and metallic grey color back. They both have that plastic look and will show dirt and are somewhat fingerprint magnets.

Next, let’s see how this tablet compares to its main competitors the Apple iPad 2 and the Motorola Xoom.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch vs Apple iPad 2 comparison

The first thing I noticed while comparing Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch and Apple iPad 2 is their default intended orientation with iPad having portrait and Galaxy Tab having landscape orientation. Also, their screen aspect ratio is different, Samsung is a little bit wider.

In terms of side thickness, they are pretty much identical. The iPad has a little more pointy edges while Samsung has rounded edges on all sides.

The display on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch looks much better, with much more pleasing colors. Samsung, in general, has amazing displays across all their devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch vs Motorola Xoom comparison

Now, let’s compare Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch with the Motorola Xoom 10-inch Android tablet. You can see that they are very similar in shape and size. Still, the Samsung display looks much better than Motorola in person, I can’t really show you that difference on an image here. The display brightness and contrast are not a strong part of the Xoom display.

The other design difference between Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch is in thickness and weight. You can clearly see that Xoom is a lot thicker than Samsung.

Motorola Xoom has a few things included extra like an SD card slot and an option of having 3G, and even 4G. Also, Xoom has that soft and rugged feel while holding compared to Samsung’s thin, iPad kind of feel.

Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch are around the same prices with their 32 GB versions so it’s up to you to decide what feature combos you like more.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch Software

Let’s take a look at the software of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch and see how applications and multimedia run on this. This is a vanilla Android 3.1 so what you see is the standard screen, certainly fine and speedy for scrolling through.

On the home screen, you can find things that are standard on any Android like shortcuts to web pages, apps, and etc. You can add more by simply pressing and holding your finger on the screen and options will appear. You can choose widgets, wallpapers, bookmarks, layouts, and the more you want to appear on your home screen.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch comes with standard stuff for Android Honeycomb pre-installed and if you want to download more functionalities you can go to the Android Market app and find what you want there.

There are also tabled optimized applications you can download for your Android in addition to standard apps.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch Performance and Specs

In terms of multimedia, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch does very well. It handles 1080p streaming media easily with some multitasking in the background too.

The display is 1280 x 800 and it’s a capacitive touch-screen and it’s one of the best on the market of this era tablets. Brightness is spot-on although, viewing angles are not too wide in all directions.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch Specs

Interestingly, the benchmarks of this device did not show that great or even expected results for a Tegra 2 tablet (1498 on Quadrant benchmark). Sunspider Java test went pretty well at 2163 milliseconds and that’s a very competitive result.

Despite its thin size, this tablet has a Lithium-Ion 7000 mAh battery, which is a large high-capacity battery. Therefore, battery life is quite good.
